The involvement of regulators in the financial services business is increasing. More and more, banks and insurance companies have to be compliant with rules and regulations like Solvency II, Basel II en SOX. They have made huge investments in (the quality of) external reporting and this will continue, as regulators are still imposing higher requirements.

To augment previous work we collaborated with CWI researchers and shared the experience of SIG in analysing large code-bases. Based on large Java and C corpora, the relationship between Cyclomatic Complexity (CC) en Source Lines of Code (SLOC) has been empirically analysed. The results of this analysis indicate that CC is not a redundant measurement of SLOC, but rather that these measurements can complement each other in an analysis setting.

Het koppelen van gemeentelijke systemen levert veel hoofdbrekens op. De gemeente Den Haag had zo haar twijfels over de daarbij veel gebruikte StUF-BG standaard en liet die eens doorlichten. Dat levert geen mooi beeld op. De gemeente heeft gemerkt dat het inzetten van die standaard geen sinecure is en liet Software Improvement Group (SIG) uitzoeken of die standaard qua interoperabiliteit, kostenreductie, marktwerking en innovatie wel oplevert wat ervan mag worden verwacht. Het simpele antwoord op die vraag luidt nee.

De cursus is in opdracht van de overheid opgezet door ECP om organisaties bewuster te maken van de energie die wordt opgesoupeerd door hun IT-systemen. De resultaten van de cursus zijn voor velen een eye-opener. “Denk in termen van 40 tot 80 procent besparingen op IT-kosten.”

Software is niet tastbaar, je kunt die niet vastpakken om te beoordelen, maar je kunt die wel degelijk controleren. SIG (Software Improvement Group) kijkt ‘onder de motorkap’ naar de kwaliteit van de broncode van software. Met als doel software beter te maken en risico’s op IT-falen te verkleinen. Dat doen ze onder meer voor het ministerie van Veiligheid en Justitie.
